Top running cranes consist of an overhead traveling crane that rides on the top of the runway beams. Top running systems can typically transport or lift loads of up to 35 tons and have an average span of 90 feet.
Underhung cranes, also referred to as under running cranes provide less lift than top running cranes. Most underhung crane systems are limited to a span of 75 feet and a load capacity of up to 25 tons.
Bridge girders for both single girder and double girder crane systems are constructed using a structural steel beam such as an I-beam or a specially engineered box girder. I-beams are more cost-effective and efficient for systems with shorter bridge crane spans and capacities up to 30 tons. They need limited engineering and fabrication. Box girder cranes use specially engineered and fabricated box beams that are engineered to CMAA specifications. Box girders are ideal in applications with longer spans and higher capacities and can be designed to accommodate specific needs related to hook height and runway design.
A single girder crane has only one bridge beam spanning two runway rails that sit on top or below with runway tracks. Single girder cranes hold less weight but are dependable and the most cost-effective option.
