Warehouse safety is extrememly important. There are many common safty mistakes and hazards happening everyday that are looked over in the workplace. In this week's #YHSafetyTips, we are going to go over some of those topics to help you be aware of more things in the warehouse workplace.
If you work in a warehouse using heavy equipment such as a forklift, you probably get comfortable using it on a daily basis and forget about the safety rules. It is important to always know your surroundings and follow the rules that are needed while working the forklift. Don't get so comfortable you forget.
All warehouses should have building permits. All of the exits should be clearly marked around your workplace, along with evacuation plans and fire extinguishers. You should also practice your safety drills frequently.
According to OSHA, two workers every month are killed from being crushed by heavy objects. Every worker needs to be properly trained to handle these heavy materials.
Everyday someone slips and falls while working in a warehouse. There should be anti-slip tape in the warehouse in all areas. On top of that - you should be keeping the warehouse clean so no loose material is around to be tripped on. Non-slip shoes are very important as well to keep you from falling down. Guardrails should be put up to avoid falling or running into any machinery. Besides falling in general, there is also the topic of fall protection. Anyone needing fall protection must be wearing it.Fall Protection
If you know the warehouse you are working in has any substances that could be harm to anyone - you must report them immediately. You cannot be fired for reporting asbestos or for any harmful substances that may be harming workers.Safety Cans
On top of keeping up with the safety rules, it is important to keep up with your Machines. A lot of warehouses wait until something is broken to fix it, when they should have be maintenancing it all along and that could have prevented the breakdown. Beside having a safe work enviorment and working areas - you must take care of yourself. If you don't stay in shape you could potentially harm yourself more at work. There are many safe techniques you can use to lift things easier and getyour job done safer to protect yourself from injury. All of your equipment should be ergonomic to help you move and get your work done at a safer pace as well.Ergonomic Equipment
When you walk into a warehouse there are usually things moving everywhere. You have to be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Warehouses keep things stocked and things high on shelves. Although, everything should be stocked and stacked properly - it doesn't mean it was. Be cautious of anything that could fall onto you.Shevling & Racking
Education and training for the job is extrememly important. Many workers tend to skip the training to get right to work and it could eventually come back to get you. Being knowledgeable on how to work everything in the warehouse and also knowing all the safety hazards are very important.
When doing a repetitive motion all day at work, you tend to injure yourself. Creating an ergonomic area such as using floor mats, pallet handling devices, and a safe workstation can ease the motions you are constantly making.
Make sure all of your pallets are in good shape. No holes and cracks should be visible and also be sure all of the legs are even so they do not wobble. The warehouse should also have racking guards for your pallets to help keep the pallets in place.
Sortation areas are typically safe to handle. They usually have conveyors, but it would make it more safe to have guards put up to keep the operators safe from moving parts. It would also help to have railings and some netting around for added safety.Guardrails & Protectors
The shipping area should have barriers to be sure the worker can not enter areas with moving robots. They should also have some presence-sensing devices to detect if the worker steps in an area they shouldn't be able to stop the robot from moving.Guardrails & Protectors
A lot of workers like to cut corners. They think it helps them get work done faster, when in reality it will eventually slow them down. Keeping up on the safety policies and enforcing the rules will prevent employees from cutting corners and staying safe.
Keeping up with a clean workplace is difficult. There is never time to clean, but it can be a hazard and must be done. Every worker should have a scheduled cleaning time at some point in their shift. That way it is always done and everyone helps out. It won't only make the workplace cleaner, but also safer.
In the receiving area of a warehouse many things are coming in - like pallets, boxes, materials, people, forlifts, pallet jacks and more. It becomes very conjested and you should be aware of your surroundings. Especially when operating a forklift. Also, where the trailers meet the dock in the loading area, sometimes the trailors are not backed up far enough which creates a gap and can lead to falling injuries.Guardrails & Protectors
